Combating Abuse

She is in an abusive relationship and is thinking about ending it. She confides that her partner has hit her. As she continues opening up to you, she keeps repeating, "But he said he is sorry. He promised he would not do that again."

You're trying to help her. What do you do?

Simply ask her, "Is his behavior getting worse or is it getting better?"

Here's the hard part . . . remain silent.

Give her time to think about it.

You may need to repeat the question again.

Ask her to look at the relationship from its beginning to the present.

Allow her to answer the question for herself so she can draw her own conclusion that his promise does not correspond with his deteriorating behavior.

Help the victim see for herself what she knows deep inside and is denying -- his behavior is becoming more abusive; he will hit her again, and the next time will be worse!
